Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has never kept secret his support of a plus-one system (four-team playoff) to decide the Division I National Champion. He’s discussed as much recently at several Crimson Caravan stops, the most recent of which was held in Orlando last week.
Brendan Sonnone reported for Rivals.com that Saban said in his May 3 address he’s in favor of using the existing bowl system to play the games and that the smaller tier bowls gives players “self-gratification,” according to the report.
Two things Saban says he hopes don’t happen with the new system, though, are extending the post-season into the spring semester and using conference champions to decide the four teams in the playoff.
If it’s limited to conference champions, “you’re not going to get the best four teams,” Saban said.
