As the Alabama Crimson Tide continue to roll through their schedule, fans and pundits are already punching the defending BCS Champion’s ticket to the Orange Bowl on January 7, 2013.
Assuming the Tide does roll through their season undefeated (including a victory in the SEC Championship game), Alabama likely would have the chance to defend their crown in Miami. Given the events of last year, even a stumble against LSU might not lock the Tide out of the title game.
But assuming the Tide does roll, who would be the most exciting matchup in Miami? The sports media had been prepared to make it a horserace between Alabama and USC, until the Trojans stumbled last weekend against Stanford.
Now other teams are being floated as possible foes to vanquish the mighty Saban and his minions. Perhaps a resurgent Florida State will rescue football from the Crimson Tide. Or perhaps Notre Dame, risen from its long slumber can rise to the challenge.
It’s a long road to the championship, with stumbles along the way for any potential challenger. Setting aside an all-SEC matchup with the likes of LSU, Georgia or even Florida, the road is rocky for the other contenders.
Florida State and Clemson have a showdown next weekend, that will knock one of those teams down in the polls. Notre Dame has to get through Michigan, Stanford, Oklahoma and USC to get a sniff of the championship game. The Sooners have their own rocky road ahead.
It’s going to be another exciting race to the finish for college football. Assuming Alabama makes it to Miami, which team would you like to see challenge the Tide for the BCS title?
