Alabama Offensive Coordinator Doug Nussmeier to Interview With Southern Miss

Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier will interview for the head coaching position with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, according to a report by the Hattiesburg American.

Southern Miss is looking to replace Ellis Johnson, who was fired after the Golden Eagles finished 0-12 this season, the only FBS school to go winless in 2012.

Nussmeier is in his first year at Alabama, having left the same position at Washington after a three-year stint with the Huskies to replace former offensive coordinator Jim McElwain. McElwain left Alabama after the 2011 season to become the head coach at Colorado State.

Nussmeier becomes the second Alabama assistant to interview for the head coaching position with USM. Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart interviewed for the same position last season. Smart interviewed this week for the Auburn head coaching position, which was filled on Tuesday by former Arkansas State head coach Gus Malzahn.

Other candidates expected to contend for the job with Southern Miss include North Carolina offensive coordinator Blake Anderson, Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown and Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
