This video of a dad receiving tickets to the BCS Championship game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Notre Dame Fighting Irish has gone viral. Since it was published last Sunday it has received over two million views, and is being shared on sports boards across the country.
In a world where it seems reality has been replaced by video, and we spend less time enjoying an activity than we do posting a status about it, this one stands out from the crowd.
If you’re reading this you’re likely a Crimson Tide fan or know someone who is. You know about the Harvey Updykes and the fans that take things way too far. You also know the ones that wouldn’t dare publicly show their love of the Tide, for fear it will get them disinvited to parties.
What’s great about this video is the genuine emotion shown by the fellow receiving the tickets. Tears are coming with the laughter, and you can see in his grin that a life-long dream has just been realized. You can also hear the pride in his son’s voice as he is able to give his Dad such a stupendous Christmas gift.
The unselfconscious emotion in the video cuts through the cynicism we’re taught by listening to smug sportscasters and snarky message board comments, and gets to the heart of being simply a fan.
This video reminds us that sport can bring out the best in us, even if we are merely spectators. It reminds Tide fans that so many people have received so much joy from Alabama football, and will continue to do so, as long as the sport is played.
