Former Alabama Player Andre Smith Arrested for Allegedly Bringing Gun to Airport

Former Alabama Crimson Tide and current Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Andre Smith was arrested Thursday at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta for allegedly carrying a gun.

According to reports, Smith, 25, was in possession of a carry-on bag containing a loaded .380 pistol as he attempted to board a plane. Police were summoned and Smith was arrested. He appeared in court Friday morning and posted a $3,000 bond.

It is likely that Smith simply forgot to check his bag before heading to the airport, and the gun was one he carried for protection and self-defense.

“We continue to remind passengers of the importance of looking through carry-on bags to ensure there are no prohibited items inside,” said Jon Allen, TSA spokesman.

Smith won the 2008 Outland Trophy at Alabama, and was the sixth overall pick for the Bengals out of Alabama in the 2009 NFL Draft. He started all 16 games in 2012.

would you rather have Smith with a gun in his bag or or one of those guys with a box cutter?? Smith is not a terrorist just a citizen concerned about his safety.

Can’t imagine this was anything more than an honest mistake on Smith’s part and the TSA statement seems to indicate as much.
