Nick Saban always seems to land a surprise recruit on National Signing Day for the Alabama Crimson Tide. It looks like that is going to happen again as five-star defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson will reportedly sign with Alabama on Wednesday. Robinson, a 6-foot-5 304 pounder, is the 4th best defensive tackle in the country according to rivals.
Robinson has been a longtime commitment to Texas as he committed to Mack Brown and the Longhorns over a year ago. He reportedly told Texas coaches in an in-home visit that he plans to sign with the Crimson Tide on National Signing Day.
There have been rumors for a while now of Robinson’s possible flip to Alabama, but it always seemed like a daunting task to pull the five star out of Texas’ backyard in Fort Worth.
Alabama hosted Robinson for an official visit on January 18th, and Saban apparently hit a home run to be able to flip someone who looked like a Texas lock for quite some time.
Robinson could play defensive tackle or offensive tackle on the next level with 247sports ranking him as the No. 2 offensive tackle in the country.
I think Robinson will likely start his Alabama career at defensive tackle, as it has been no secret that Saban and company have been hot on the recruiting trails for a defensive tackle with other big name targets including Montravius Adams and Eddie Vanderdoes. The Tide lost their starting nose tackle Jesse Williams, and are looking to shore up the depth at the position behind likely starter Brandon Ivory.
Behind Ivory there isn’t a lot of proven depth, so Robinson’s potential signing would be huge in that department.
Alabama has already put together one of the best recruiting classes in the country, but the Robinson flip might be what pushes the Crimson Tide to the No. 1 class in the nation.
Robinson will officially make his announcement on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on his school’s football field.
