The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team fell to the Auburn Tigers 49-37 in Auburn Arena on Wednesday night. The loss moves the Tide to 14-8 overall (6-3 SEC) while Auburn improves to 9-13 (3-6 SEC). Alabama’s five-game winning streak against Auburn is snapped and Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant is now 5-2 against the Tigers, with both losses coming at Auburn.
The first half started out well for the Tide, scoring 9 points before allowing its first field goal with 13:00 to go. The Tide went 15-2 to kick things off. Then, Auburn streaked 10 points and didn’t allow the Crimson Tide to score for six minutes to make it 15-12. Alabama ended the half on a good note and led 23-13 headed into the locker room.
The second half is where things started to unravel for Alabama, and the Tigers began their comeback. They started off the half 14-3 to take their first lead of the game 27-26. Six more points were scored to make it 33-26, before Alabama made its next field goal. It was 40-31 by the final media timeout and that’s what sealed it for the Tigers. The Tide’s 37 points was their lowest output this season.
The Crimson Tide’s Trevor Releford and Rodney Cooper were the leading scorers with 11 points. Alabama only had 9 points off the bench, all scored by Nick Jacobs. Moussa Gueye, one of the starters for Alabama, had no offensive production with 0 shots and no assists. Alabama shot 28 percent from the floor.
Auburn’s Allen Payne and Josh Wallace led the scoring for the Tigers with 11 points each and 8 rebounds between them. The Tiger bench scored 14, with Chris Denson leading the charge with 9. Auburn had fewer turnovers, slightly edging Alabama 14-16.
Alabama comes back to Tuscaloosa Saturday night in Coleman Coliseum when they take on the LSU Tigers. Tip-Off is at 7:00pm with ESPN2 covering the game nationally.
