Alabama Softball: Crimson Tide Closes Road Trip With Win Over UAB 8-4

The defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide softball team closed out it’s long, season-opening road journey with a 8-4 victory over the UAB in Birmingham, AL at the UAB Softball Field to spoil the Blazer’s home opener. The win brings Alabama’s record to 11-0. UAB’s record drops to 6-4.

The winning pitcher was sophmore ace Jackie Traina, who has won six games for the Crimson Tide this season and brings her total to 66 career victories. Traina needs two more wins to secure fourth place on the Alabama all-time wins list and pass Chrissy Owens.

Traina also accounted for two hits and a home run in the batting lineup while striking out nine.

Freshman Haylie McCleney continues to have success, with this game being her fifth three-hit game in eleven games total. Meanwhile, Senior Kaila Hunt gave the Crimson Tide 2-of-3 at home plate as well as her fifth home run of the season.  As for UAB, their four runs came off a grand slam from Anna Kimbrell, who got her fourth of the season.

The Crimson Tide were slated to open the season against South Alabama last week, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Alabama will instead have their home opener at Rhodes Stadium this weekend with the Easton Bama Bash, hosting Western Illinois, Iowa and Winthrop over five games.
