This past week, Athlon Sports published an article ranking the top coaching jobs in college football. In the rankings, factors such as tradition, facilities, location and money were considered. Alabama is listed at No. 3 in the list following Texas and Florida.
Earlier in February, Stadium Journey magazine rated Bryant-Denny ranked No. 1 in a among all of the FBS college stadiums. The ratings were based on overall experience and the home of the Tide was followed by Notre Dame stadium and Michigan stadium.
Few Crimson Tide fans would argue with the idea that the game day experience in Tuscaloosa has no equal but some—perhaps most—Tide faithful might question why Athlon would consider Texas or Florida to be overall better jobs. The truth can be found in the opening paragraph which mentions that the most important factor considered was: “Where would we want to coach?” Fair question. Who has the best job in college football? It depends on if you’d rather be Mack Brown or Nick Saban. One of them is not on the hot seat.
Rankings of this nature are almost always based on the writer’s personal preferences, and they are always arbitrary, but Athlon was, at least, honest enough to say so. Bama fans can take pride in the fact that the top coach in modern college football resides in Tuscaloosa. Another interesting note from Athlon can be found in the comments regarding in-state rival Auburn. According to Athlon, “Auburn is a state school with a great following, but it will always be No. 2 in Alabama behind the Crimson Tide from Tuscaloosa.” These comments can’t do much for the already bruised and battered sufferers of little brother syndrome. Perhaps another boycott is on the horizon.
