Alabama Crimson Tide Golf Team Makes a Run At The Championship

Alabama fans are a special breed. While other fan bases are “football” or “basketball” fans, we are a unique brand of fanatics that can get excited about anything involving our university. Sure Alabama is a football first school, but have you ever been to an Alabama gymnastics meet? Our fans get seriously rowdy for some gymnastics. Alabama fans love greatness in any sport, and our golf team is great.

The Alabama golf team is currently ranked second in the nation behind Cal. The Tide sits just above UCLA and Washington, at No. 3 and 4 respectively. So not only is Alabama sitting second in the nation, but it’s the only thing standing in the way of PAC 12 domination of golf.

College golf is unique in that it takes a largely independent solo sport and creates a team atmosphere.  Stars are great, but people enjoy rooting for teams. This is why the Ryder Cup is so popular, it allows us to root for all of our favorite golf pros together fighting for a common goal. (Though I wish team USA would win the Ryder Cup at least once in a while.)

Alabama Golf has it’s stars, most notably Cory Whitsett who shot a 7-under 137 last weekend at the Linger Longer. Put Whitsett together with Bobby Wyatt and Justin Thomas, and Alabama golf has a “big three,” in the words of head coach Jay Seawell.

Alabama won the Linger Longer tournament for the third consecutive year this past weekend, with four players landing in the top ten. With Alabama 40 points back from Cal the Aggie Invitational, coming up on April 6th, will be extremely important for the team going into the SEC Championships.  Alabama will also face tough competition from number 10 Georgia in the Championships.

We will keep you posted on the Alabama golf team over the next few weeks as they prepare to make a run at what could be Alabama’s second national championship of 2013.
