Jersey number 12 gives us our first walk-on of the 2013 Alabama Crimson Tide, along with a redshirt sophomore quarterback that will compete for playing time in relief of AJ McCarron.
In a surprise to many Alabama fans and college football analysts in the summer of 2010, Alabama took a quarterback commitment from a three-star recruit out of Tampa, Florida. Phillip Ely redshirted during the 2011 season after signing with Alabama in February.
Ely served as the third option at quarterback behind AJ McCarron and Blake Sims. He competed in six of Alabama’s 14 games. He mainly handed the ball off to whichever running back was in the game, but he did complete three of his four attempted passes. His final pass attempt of the season came against Mississippi State and went 27 yards for a touchdown.
Look for Ely to continue his backup role. He most likely fell behind redshirt freshman Alec Morris, which puts him at number four on the depth chart. Some rumors swirled about a possible transfer, but Ely ended those rumors. Will he transfer if he continues to drop down the chart? I have the slightest clue but wouldn’t blame if he did.
