Alabama midfielder Merel van Dongen has been named to the final 23-player squad with the Netherlands women’s national soccer team for the 2013 European Championships, beginning later this month in Sweden.
Dutch national team coach Roger Rabaya made the final roster announcements for the 12-nation tournament on Monday.
Van Dongen and the Netherlands will face reigning European champion Germany (July 11), Norway (July 14) and Iceland (July 17) in Group B. The top two teams in the group will automatically advance to the quarterfinals.
Van Dongen previously competed with the national team at the under-15 and under-19 levels.
This past season, Van Dongen became the first player in UA history to be selected as SEC Freshman of the Year after recording three goals and three assists in 19 starts. She was also selected to the All-SEC second team, NSCAA All-South Region team and TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Freshman Team of the Season.
Alabama opens up its 2013 campaign against Clemson on August 17 in Atlanta, Ga.
