Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron is among four players representing the Tide on the 2013 Maxwell Award list, released Monday by the Maxwell Football Club.
College football watch lists are an annual rite of summer, and the announcement of the 77th annual Maxwell Award watch list should whet Tide fans’ appetites for some Alabama football.
In addition to McCarron and teammate C.J. Mosley – both of whom were semifinalists for the award last year – Crimson Tide players Amari Cooper and T.J. Yeldon are also on the watch list. The two-time defending BCS National Champions have more players on the watch list than any other school.
Other players from the SEC making the list include South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney, Georgia’s Aaron Murray and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M.
The Maxwell Football Club also announced its watch list for the 2013 Bednarik Award, given annually to the college football defensive player of the year.
Alabama has three players on the Bednarik watch list: Mosley, Deion Belue and HaHa Clinton-Dix.
Last season, Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o became the first player to win both the Maxwell Award and the Bednarik Award in the same year.
According to the press release from the Maxwell Football Club:
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 25th. The winners of the 2013 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12th. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 7, 2014.
