By now everyone has seen the footage of Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban leaping into the arms of quarterback AJ McCarron after Alabama’s big win over the LSU Tigers. But have you watched it to the strains of Alabama native Lionel Richie’s ballad Endless Love?
Sure, it may be a mocking tribute, but we can’t even be mad about it. This was a genuine moment of exuberance by a man often chided by the media for being stoic and calculated. It was a huge win for his team, against their toughest conference rival, in a game that could have eliminated a shot at a third consecutive BCS National Championship.
Saban has developed a close bond over the last few years with McCarron, a bond some Alabama fans have likened to that between Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant and quarterback Pat Trammell. McCarron has, under Saban’s tutelage, gone from being a cocky gunslinger to a confident leader that embodies all the traits Saban has worked to instill in this team.
It was a hell of a win by Alabama, and one of the last home games these two will have together. Silly tributes or not, this was a moment we’re glad we were allowed to witness.
