Alabama Crimson Tide punter Cody Mandell had the best night of his career Saturday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and it was enough to earn him our Player of the Week honors.
The fact that a punter is the standout player says all there is to say about the Tide’s performance in their 20-7 win, but it doesn’t take away from Mandell’s contributions to the win.
Mandell had four punts with an average of 55 yards. He kept Mississippi State on the wrong side of field position, despite their success on offense. Of his four punts, three were followed by three-and-outs by the Bulldogs.
In his postgame comments, Alabama head coach Nick Saban had high praise for Mandell’s efforts.
“I thought Cody did a fantastic job today, man,” Saban said. “One time he did it against the wind. The wind was a factor in the game today. But Cody had a fabulous day today. I thought he was huge.”
