Alabama baseball wins in exciting walk off

If there is anything we’ve learned in two weekends from Alabama baseball, it is that Friday nights have not been kind to the Crimson Tide and this team is going to have some exciting finishes for the season.

Alabama fell 2-1 on Friday night to Stephen F. Austin in 13 innings as the Lumberjacks held the Crimson Tide scoreless for 12 straight innings to pull out the victory. Georgia Salem tied a school record for hits in the game as he ended up with 5 hits and a stolen base in the losing effort for Alabama.

Alabama must have taken something from Salem’s effort Friday, as they used five Lumberjack errors and two HR’s from freshman Casey Hughston to roll to a 8-0 win over SFA. Alabama was led offensively by Hughston, who finished with three hits and three RBI’s on the day. On the mound, Junior Justin Kamplain stifled the SFA offense for six innings, allowing only three hits while striking out seven on the day. Nick Eicholtz and Mitch Greer followed up Kamplains performance by working a perfect 7-8-9 innings as they improved to 3-2 on the season.

Alabama would look to Junior Wade Wass to deliver some heroics in the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of the series, and he did exactly that as he laced a single into left field to give the Crimson Tide a 2-1 victory in 10 innings. Roy Castillo and Jon Keller would each work five innings on the day as they combined to give up only seven hits while striking out 10 on the afternoon.

More notes from the SFA series:

  • Alabama has not allowed more than 3 runs in a game this season.
  • Jon Keller has now pitched 9 innings without allowing a run this season.
  • Mikey White has reached base in a team-high 7 straight games.
  • Kyle Overstreet added his first HR of his career in the 7th inning Sunday afternoon.

Alabama will face off against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on Wednesday before facing Lousiana in Lafayette this weekend. Southern Miss was swept this past weekend by Louisiana-Lafayette to fall to 2-5 on the season. Louisiana Lafayette are winners of 7 straight games, and will travel to Baton Rouge for a matchup with LSU on Tuesday before hosting the Crimson Tide.
