The Alabama Crimson Tide hit the practice field once again Tuesday afternoon as A-Day draws near.
Brandon Greene and freshman Cameron Robinson took turns with the first team at left tackle, with Arie Kouandjio at left guard, Ryan Kelly at center, Leon Brown at right guard, and Austin Shepherd at right tackle. When the second team came on it was either Greene or Robinson at left tackle, Bradley Bozeman at left guard, Paul Waldrop at center, Alphonse Taylor at right guard, and Grant Hill at right tackle.
Cornerback Maurice Smith was much more active in practice today than he was last week, as he was recovering from a mild concussion. Fellow cornerback Tony Brown is still wearing a very visible brace on his left shoulder. He injured that shoulder a few weeks ago when he fell during track practice.
Freshman quarterback David Cornwell has dropped his knee brace and is practicing without it for the first time this spring.
It looks like Alabama has settled on the nickel defense for now, with Cyrus Jones and Bradley Sylve at cornerback, Landon Collins and Geno Smith at safety, Trey DePriest and Reggie Ragland at the linebacker spots, and Jarrick Williams at star. The second group continues to shuffle, today saw Tony Brown and Maurice Smith at corner, Nick Perry and Hootie Jones at safety, Shaun Dion Hamilton and Dillon Lee at linebacker, and Jabriel Washington at star. Anthony Averett also worked with that group at cornerback some.
The running back rotation has not changed at all the whole spring. TJ Yeldon leads the group with Derrick Henry behind him and Kenyan Drake at third.
The Alabama offense was working on the I-formation during the media viewing period. The first team group was Blake Sims at quarterback, TJ Yeldon at running back, and Corey McCarron at fullback. McCarron and Jalston Fowler have taken turns at fullback with the first team, but with Fowler playing tailback, fullback, and h-back positions this may be a situation of Lane Kiffin trying to get McCarron more familiar with the position that he has not played in college. The second group was Alec Morris at quarterback, Kenyan Drake at tailback, and walk-on Michael Nysewander at fullback. The third group was Cooper Bateman at quarterback, Altee Tenpenny at tailback, and Jalston Fowler at fullback. Derrick Henry was oddly working at fourth and sometimes fifth in line during some of the I-formation and pistol formation drills.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano was in attendance at today’s practice, and was spotted watching the defense intently. ESPN commentator Todd Blackledge was also watching practice.
