The Alabama football list of 2020 verbal commits hit No. 25 on Saturday. As the Quiet Period hits and the Dead period looms, the Crimson Tide is not close to being finished.
The Quiet Period before the NCAA Early Signing Period began Sunday. Alabama football picked up verbal commit No. 25 on Saturday when JUCO All-American cornerback, Ronald Williams announced for the Crimson Tide.
There are no more announcements expected until the first day recruits can sign, on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide will not add another defensive back after adding Williams. There is a need for another tight end, a defensive lineman and a wide receiver in the 2020 class. If there is room, the Alabama football staff might add another running back.
There are a couple of other players too elite to turn away if they were to choose the Crimson Tide. All of which makes for four days of hectic juggling leading up to Wednesday. There have been rumors three or maybe four current, verbal commits may have grades problems. It has also been rumored other flips to the Tide are expected. One of those potential flips and the top remaining defensive line target, McKinney Jackson are not expected to announce until February. Presumably, spots will be held for both.
In terms of suspense for the Early Signing Period, the biggest concern for Alabama football fans is holding on to 4-Star, defensive tackle, Tim Smith. Smith visited the Gators again over the weekend and Dan Mullen and his staff are pushing Smith hard to flip. Smith is set to sign during the early period but he is not expected to enroll early. Among the list of 25 verbal commits, 13 are slated to enroll early.
The final class number will be 27 or 28. Unless all the players with grade concerns fail to qualify, it is looking like grayshirts might be needed for a player or two. Nick Saban always makes the numbers work. Short of some surprise flips causing Crimson Tide attrition, it is looking as Signing Day in February will only have two or three available slots.
Clemson regained the No. 1 ranking in the 247Sports Composite after adding another top player. The Tigers have 22 verbals and room to pad a lead. The Crimson Tide is a solid No. 2.
