5 takeaways for Alabama football vs. Mississippi State
2. The receivers have what it takes to dominate
Alabama football has always had one of the best wide receiver corps in college football. At one point, they had four first-round receivers in the starting lineup. All of those guys are now shining in the NFL. That leaves Alabama with holes to fill at receiver, and there have been question marks so far.
John Metchie was supposed to be WR1 for the Tide, but he has struggled so far this season. He had too many drops against Texas A&M, and he has yet to take the top off of the defense consistently. He is seeing more double teams with DeVonta Smith gone, and he has not been dominant.
However, Metchie had one of the best days of his Alabama football career against Mississippi State. He scored early with some yards after the catch, and he was consistently open. Drops were no longer a concern, and he made plays for his young quarterback.
Jameson Williams had another great performance, and Slade Bolden made some plays as a blocker and receiver. He had a nice diving catch that was ruled incomplete after review, but it looked like a catch to me.
Now that we know that the receivers can make plays, we just have to see if they can do it consistently. Today was great for Alabama, and it will hopefully be a step in the right direction.
