Brian Daboll and Tua Tagovailoa back together again?
Buffalo Bills’ Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll and former Alabama football QB, Tua Tagovailoa may soon be reunited in south Florida. It is being reported that after his recent interview, Daboll is the odds-on candidate to be the next Maimi Dolphins head coach.
It is not just Daboll’s Alabama football connection with Tua Tagovailoa that is boosting his chances with the Dolphins. Alex Mesa, writing for Phin Phanatic, recently touted Daboll as the Dolphins’ best choice because of his success developing Buffalo Bills’ QB, Josh Allen.
Daboll has been considered for NFL head coaching positions before, but this appears to be the offseason when it will happen. Along with the Dolphins, the New York Giants and Chicago Bears are have shown strong interest in Daboll’s services.
Going to the Buffalo Bills from Tuscaloosa in the winter of 2018 was almost like going home for Daboll. Daboll was born not far from Buffalo in Welland, Ontario and played high school football in Athol Springs, NY. Almost five years ago, introducing Daboll to Alabama football fans, we wrote about Welland,
In this part of the country, they love ice fishing, ice hockey, the Buffalo Sabres, the Buffalo Bills, The New York Yankees, and the Toronto Blue Jays, pretty much in that order.
They don’t have much interest in college football. It is a place where you can find people who have never heard of an Iron Bowl.
No doubt that changed when Brain Daboll convinced Nick Saban to go with freshman quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa in the second half of an Alabama football, National Championship game. The decision and the results made Crimson Tide and college football history.
Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban and Brian Daboll
Nick Saban and Brian Daboll go way back, long before a New England Patriots assistant coach became the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback coach for the Crimson Tide. Daboll was a graduate assistant for two seasons in the late 1990s, on Nick Saban’s Michigan State staff.
Daboll is not a flashy, south-Florida type of guy. Even though the physical environments of Hawaii and south Florida compare – Tua is not a typical south-Florida guy either. Both are solidly anchored in a kind of hard-work grit that Nick Saban did not find with the Dolphins in 2005.
Brian Flores may have that same grit. But things didn’t work out with Flores and Tua. Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross chose Tua and rejected Flores. Adding Brain Daboll may be just what Tua and the Dolphins need.
Brian Daboll does not have time for much, other than coaching the Bills this week. He and the Bills offense have a date with Kansas City.
