Takeaways From Coach Saban on “Hey Coach”

Every Thursday, Coach Saban and his weekly radio show “Hey Coach” is broadcast live from Tuscaloosa at Bob’s Victory Grille. Be sure to follow our own Karen on Twitter for highlights from the show, live as they happen.

Here are a few of the points Saban made this week.

1) Coach Saban mentioned Jacob Coker and touched on the quarterback competition. He said that people have no idea how difficult it can be to learn a new offense, especially if you factor in a new place with new people. Coker showed flashes of brilliance during the Florida Atlantic game but there were a few areas that needed improving. Those things will come in time as he spends more time with the team. From all of the interviews, it sounds like he has a great supporting cast behind him.

2) He also said that the younger guys need to play their way on to the field. I think that just means the little things. He mentioned Rashaan Evans earlier this week. Saban noted on Evans’ sack, he didn’t wrap up the quarterback on the tackle. If you have followed Saban and Alabama for as long as I have, you know that goes back to the little things that Saban preaches on. Earlier this week, he also mentioned wide receiver Robert Foster. Foster apparently made a reception but apparently ran to the wrong area of the field after making the catch. Saban said that if he had gone the right way, the play would have probably resulted in six points. Once those guys get the small mistakes down, they will see the field.

3) According to coach, there is a lot less selfishness on this team. Will that win a championship? We don’t know but it can’t hurt. I don’t plan on naming any names from the last season but the general consensus was that we had a few with attitude problems. That can cause a division between the team and in turn, hurt their cohesiveness on and off the field. If these guys have their heads on as well as their hearts playing as one, the sky is the limit.

4) During this show, Saban had a lot of things to say about Alabama and even some memories before he accepted the job to be the coach. On what would have been his 101st birthday, Saban said that he doesn’t believe that there will ever be a coach as good as Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. One fan that was in attendance even mentioned how much Saban reminder her of Bear. Coach Saban told the crowd that he read Coach Bryant’s book as a kid and that former Alabama quarterback Joe Namath was his idol. He added that he would watch Alabama a lot as a kid.

5) Some may think that the time he got the biggest chill at Alabama was possibly winning one of the national titles but it may be what you least expect: His first spring game in Tuscaloosa. Saban said that expecting 40,000 and seeing 90,000 was awesome.

I’ll start recapping the shows each week for those of you that may miss it. I’ll end this one by leaving a few tweets from Karen (mentioned above) that made me smile.
