Lino Gutierrez
Lino Gutierrez is a diplomat and graduate of the University of Alabama. He is a native of Havana, Cuba. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s in political science. In 1976, he received an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Alabama. He was a social studies teacher for the Dade County (Fl.) School System and for the Urban League of Miami.
In 1977, Ambassador Gutierrez entered the United States Foreign Service. He served in Latin America, Europe, and at the US State Department. From 1996-1999, he served as the United States Ambassador to Nicaragua. While in Nicaragua, Ambassador Gutierrez coordinated the United States relief effort after Hurricane Mitch hit Nicaragua.
He served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the State Department from 1999-2001, then as Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs in 2001 and 2002. In 2002 he served as International Affairs Advisor at the National War College. In 2003 he was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Argentina.
Ambassador Gutierrez has also served in Grenada, Lisbon, Nassau, Paris, Port-au-Prince, and Santo Domingo. At the State Department, Gutierrez has been Officer-in-Charge of Nicaraguan Affairs, Officer-in-Charge of Portuguese Affairs, Director of the Office of Policy Planning, and Coordination and Press in the Bureau of Inter-American Affairs.
In 2007 Gutierrez entered consulting and became CEO of Gutierrez Global LLC. He was the Senior Advisor on Cuba transition and Latin America to Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez.
Ambassador Gutierrez currently works as the Executive Director of the Una Chapman Cox Foundation and as an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University.
