Auburn fans! Quick!
Mark your calendars!
The official date for the 2016 Birmingham Bowl has been set for December 29th!
We know you had such a life-altering experience in the ‘Ham last year, and we’re certain you’ll want to participate again this year.
In case you’ve forgotten (or didn’t pay attention in the first place), the Auburn Tigers played the Memphis Tigers in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl. The Tigers of Auburn beat the Tigers of Memphis 31-10, and catapulted Auburn to a 7-6 winning record for the season.
Obviously, Birmingham is good luck for the Barn.
Here’s a quick recap of their experience.
When the team arrived on their fancy charter buses (DVD players and everything!) from 109 miles down Highway 280 in Auburn, they were greeted by fans at the Wynfrey Regency Hotel. The boys enjoyed some down time wandering around the Riverchase Galleria, touted as the largest shopping mall in the state of Alabama.
They practiced for the bowl at the luxurious facilities of Hoover High School. Buccaneer head coach Josh Niblett offered to have his team play the Tigers in a scrimmage match to help them prepare, but Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn felt a loss to the Bucs would not be good for morale.
The threat of rain (or losing) eventually moved workouts to an indoor soccer facility.
At one point, some members of the team went to visit Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and even I can’t make fun of them for that.
The team was also treated to a visit to Vulcan Park to see the largest, bare-assed cast iron statue in the world. Meanwhile Auburn’s cheerleaders got to visit historic Sloss Furnace, an industrial iron furnace that is now…well, basically nothing.

At one point during this trip of a lifetime, Auburn did in fact play Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field, nicknamed “The Old Gray Lady” because like an old woman, it is falling to pieces. Auburn’s team held itself together quite well though, besting Memphis by 21 points and securing themselves a place in Birmingham Bowl history.
Auburn fans, we know you had such a great experience last year, and we want this year to be just as special for you. Be sure to go ahead and snap up your tickets before the American Athletic Conference opponent’s team gets wind of this amazing late December getaway.
I’ll be sure to personally greet you at the Wynfrey wearing my t-shirt that says, “It’s Nice To Have You In Birmingham.”
