During the SEC Spring Meetings, the rumor of East/West divisional shakeups was a hot topic. Nothing came from that talk, the fact there is even a discussion proves that Saban and Alabama football has set itself apart.

Sure, it’s funny that Auburn wanted to make the move to the SEC East. Just think of all the jokes that come from that. They want to go to the division that hasn’t won a SEC Championship since 2008. They want the easiest schedule out there. Forget the PR language and stuffy words. This move would make Auburn nothing short of a laughingstock.

However, there is one thing that is clear from all this discussion: Alabama football is in a league of its own. Auburn or even Tennessee won’t care to admit it. It’s Alabama’s world and everyone else is living in it.

Simply put:

You’re Welcome, SEC

Yes, we love to think there is a lot of parity in the SEC. Sure, the SEC West has beaten the East in every conference championship game since 2008. Hey, our middle of the pack teams will beat any team in another conference! SEC! SEC! SEC!

Except that’s not quite correct. Sure, the SEC is a stacked conference. But Alabama is on top of Mount Everest among a valley of other SEC teams. There are facts to prove this thinking.

First, there is an often-overlooked statistic that many people miss. Alabama has not lost more than one conference game in eight of Nick Saban’s ten seasons. In fact, they haven’t lost more than one conference game since 2010.

Second, the margins of victory against the SEC are enormous. Four of the last six seasons have averaged at least 24 points per game margin of victory. In fact, in all the seasons of the 2010’s decade, Alabama averages 20 points per game over SEC teams. The closest team to that? Florida with only 4 points on average.

In the Saban-Alabama era, Alabama football has won five SEC championships. Florida has won one, LSU and Auburn have won two each. During that period the Alabama football record against those three teams is 21-7. Of those seven losses, only two of them were after 2010.

Think on that a moment. Since 2010, against the top three teams in the SEC not named Alabama, the Crimson Tide has two losses.

It is Alabama football’s world among the SEC and hiding in another division will do little to diminish every other school’s pain.
