From 2007 to 2023, nobody did it better than Nick Saban. After spending two forgettable seasons leading the Miami Dolphins, the former national championship-winning head coach at LSU returned to the SEC. Despite inheriting an Alabama program that had been anything close to championship-caliber in well over a decade, Saban delivered his first of six in Tuscaloosa three years later in 2009.
While coaching absolutely matters, Saban would not have been able to win his six national titles at Alabama without the help of some elite players. Given that his run leading the Crimson Tide largely predated the NIL/transfer portal era, nearly all of his best players were homegrown. Nobody recruited like Saban, but his ability to develop and empower all of his players is why he became such a legend.
Without further ado, here are the most important recruits to have ever played for Saban at Alabama.
10. DeVonta Smith: 2017 4-star WR (Amite, LA)
Devonta Smith should arguably be higher on this list. He did win a Heisman Trophy after all as a wide receiver, albeit during a COVID season. The two-time national champion is best known for his heroics on Second-and-26. However, it was his ability to just shine anyway as an undersized player and an unheralded recruit from Louisiana that set him apart. At the very least, he deserves a mention here.
9. Mac Jones: 2017 3-star QB (Jacksonville, FL)
Mac Jones may not have won a Heisman Trophy, but he perhaps embodies the best of the Saban era. Despite being buried on the quarterback depth chart, he trusted the process, bided his time, and got the absolute most out of his three-star talent. Alabama earned a reputation of being a place where iron sharpened iron. Jones could have transferred away, but he stuck it out, and became a champion.
8. Bryce Young: 2020 5-star QB (Santa Ana, CA)
Bryce Young is the only Alabama quarterback to win a Heisman Trophy. While he never won a national championship as a starter, he largely personifies just how big of a recruiting power Alabama was at Saban's apex. It did not matter where a player hailed from. If Saban wanted him, he could get his guy. Young may now lead the Carolina Panthers, but during his time at Alabama, there was no one like him.
7. Mark Ingram II: 2008 4-star RB (Flint, MI)
Mark Ingram II has unfortunately had other players steal his shine in the annals of Alabama lore, but he certainly deserves his flowers here. The former four-star running back came to Tuscaloosa out of Michigan before the Crimson Tide had won anything of note. In a way, he bet on himself, and was rewarded for it. Ingram left Alabama for the NFL as a Heisman Trophy winner and a national champion.
6. Tua Tagovailoa: 2017 5-star QB (Honolulu, HI)
Tua Tagovailoa touches many of the same notes that Bryce Young did coming over from the West Coast. At his peak, nobody threw a prettier spiral than Tagovailoa. He famously took over for an ineffective Jalen Hurts in the national championship game to beat Georgia. As they say, the rest is history. While injuries later derailed his career, Tagovailoa helped show everyone how big Alabama is.

5. Eddie Jackson: 2013 3-star ATH (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
Eddie Jackson came to Alabama as a former three-star athlete out of Fort Lauderdale. He ended up playing in the defensive backfield for Saban, really growing under his leadership every season. While Jackson did end up being a great player in the back-end for the Chicago Bears during his NFL career, none of this would have been possible without him really finding himself in the secondary at Alabama.
4. Terrence Cody: 2008 3-star JUCO DT (Perkinston, MS)
Terrence Cody was another unheralded recruit for Alabama, but only this time, he came over from junior college. While his NFL career was nothing to write home about, who could ever forget about Mt. Cody? During his time at Alabama, Cody was an complete monster in trenches, helping define what it means to win prolifically at a place like Alabama. When Cody was rolling, nobody even had a chance.
3. Minkah Fitzpatrick: 2015 5-star CB (Jersey City, NJ)
Minkah Fitzpatrick was perhaps the most gifted playmaker at the position group Saban knew best. Fitzpatrick came to Alabama from New Jersey during the height of this Crimson Tide dynasty. To this day, there are things that Fitzpatrick could do in the defensive backfield that may never be replicated at Alabama. The game came to Fitzpatrick naturally in Tuscaloosa, allowing him to marvel in the NFL.
2. Derrick Henry: 2013 5-star RB (Yulee, FL)
Derrick Henry was built differently. The ultimate workhorse back carried Alabama to a national title in 2015, despite not having the best quarterback play around him. While he has gone on to be an all-timer in the NFL, it all started by Saban putting his trust and faith in him to carry the Alabama offense during a critical stretch. Henry is the most recent Heisman winner to play running back for a reason...
1. Julio Jones: 2008 5-star WR (Foley, AL)
Julio Jones checked all of the boxes. He was every bit the five-star coming out of Foley, Alabama, the same high school that produced Crimson Tide legend Ken Stabler. As arguably the most gifted wide receiver of his generation, he took what he learned at Alabama to become the most dynamic player the Atlanta Falcons have ever seen. Jones was one of the first Alabama players to sign up for Saban.
There are many other Alabama greats who starred for Saban, but these 10 each resonate differently.
