Great college football players make game-changing plays with enough frequency for their stellar performances to be expected. The Alabama Crimson Tide has as many of that type of player as any team. However, they are not enough to achieve lofty goals. The great players need lots of help from guys who may be short of great but are consistently good.

Guys like Yhonzae Pierre, Michael Carroll, Bray Hubbard, Zabien Brown, Ryan Coleman-Williams, and Keelon Russell, along with several others, are expected to be great. Team goals require that another 40-plus players can be counted on to do their jobs successfully. 'Just do your job' is a longstanding, essential coaching mantra. In the aggregate, being consistently good is as valuable as greatness.

10 Key Alabama Football Players

Let's consider 10 Alabama Crimson Tide football players who must consistently 'do their job' in the 2026 season. To Alabama fans, none are under-the-radar guys, but with one exception, all have potential yet to be fully proven. The list is heavy with 'trench' players because on both sides of the ball, the trenches are where Alabama needs the most improvement from last season.

  • Racin Delgatty - The former Cal-Poly transfer was a 3-star recruit. He is projected to start at center. In Transfer Portal Rankings, 247Sports ranked Delgatty as the No. 28 interior offensive lineman.
  • William Sanders - A 4-star recruit for Alabama in the 2024 class, Sanders' potential has been dampened by injury. He missed spring work but is expected to be 100% in Fall Camp and earn a left guard starting role.
  • Jackson Lloyd - Lloyd was a highly touted 4-star or 5-star-ranked recruit in the 2025 class. Early in the spring, Ryan Grubb announced Lloyd as the Tide's starting left tackle. Along with Michael Carroll, Lloyd must lead the O-line group to sustained production. Lloyd might not be 'under the radar' as much as others, but his limited experience from only five games in 2025 makes him a question mark.
  • London Simmons - A former 2025 3-star recruit, Simmons played in 15 games last season with two starts. A back injury slowed him last season, and he missed spring work to aid recovery. The interior defensive line has the depth for rotation, with Simmons projected for a starting role.
  • Devan Thompkins - Thompkins spent four seasons at USC but was never a mainstay on the Trojans' defensive line. He was a highly ranked transfer who is expected to start for Alabama.
  • Terrance Green - Green would have been a starter for Oregon, but his 2026 starter role is now in Tuscaloosa. The highly-ranked transfer is expected to make an immediate impact on the Crimson Tide's defensive line.
  • Caleb Woodson - The Virginia Tech transfer is on everybody's radar. He seems to be an immediate answer for Alabama at Mike linebacker. For Alabama's front seven to succeed, Woodson must deliver, not just at inside linebacker role, but as a leader as well.
  • QB Reese or Luke Metz - Reese is the most likely Sting linebacker starter. Whether Reese or Metz (or maybe Cayden Jones) starts, the position cannot be a weak link in Kane Wommack's defense.
  • Lorcan Quinn - Perhaps Conor Talty will hold on to his primary place-kicker role. It could be the former Gaelic football player and Marshall transfer Lorcan Quinn instead. Quinn has a big leg, and both guys may have pivotal roles.
