Oklahoma football: What the folks in SEC territory have to say about Bob Stoops
"Bob Stoops is the Southeastern Conference’s gadfly. The Oklahoma coach, when asked over the last 15 months, has challenged the notion that the SEC stands far above all other conference in college football. Stoops has been willing to criticize the SEC’s lack of parity, the SEC’s eight-game conference schedule coupled with some inferior nonconference slates, and Alabama coach Nick Saban’s assertion that the Sugar Bowl last January was a “consolation bowl” and thus his Crimson Tide wasn’t emotionally jacked up for the game. And Stoops’ comments have made him Public Enemy No. 1 in the South. As OU preps to host SEC member Tennessee on Saturday, The Oklahoman gauged the viewpoints on Stoops from coaches, fans and influential media in SEC territory."
I know this isn’t technically Alabama football, but I did want to include it. You can always print this one out and use it as a replacement if you find yourself looking for toilet paper in the morning. You’ve seen what Bob Stoops has to say about the SEC or Alabama because just as soon as he says it, the national guys run with it. I did a piece on our old blog that compared the SEC’s dominance to the Big 12 and particularly Oklahoma since the BCS started after he made some of his comments.. It wasn’t good. Just a quick summary of that: Since 1998, the Big 12 is 2-5 in BCS Title Games, with three of those losses by Oklahoma. Oklahoma hasn’t won a title since 2000 and since then, the SEC has won 9 out of the 11 they played in. One of those losses was to another SEC team. Bob, tone it down until you got something to back it up with.
College football’s Week 2 winners and losers
"Blake Sims: Nick Saban declared Alabama’s starting quarterback job open even after Sims played well last week against West Virginia. Saban remained noncommittal after Saturday’s 41-0 defeat of Florida Atlantic, but the needle is clearly pointing to Sims. The senior was 11-for-13 for 214 yards with two touchdowns as the Crimson Tide found the end zone on all three of their first-quarter possessions with Sims behind center. His competition, Jacob Coker, threw for 202 yards, though most of his success came with the game well in hand due to the play of Sims."
The Tide’s own Blake Sims gets a nod as a “Week Two Winner” in USA Today. Jake Coker even gets a mention as well. I’m more impressed with these two as the season goes on and not only for their on the field play. You can tell in their interviews that they “get it” and are fully bought in to “The Process”. They just want to do their part, whatever that may be, to get the Tide a win on Saturdays.
"Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama: It didn’t matter who was throwing him the football, Cooper was going to make a play in the Crimson Tide’s 41-0 win. Of the 26 Alabama receptions on passes from Blake Sims and Jake Coker against Florida Atlantic, Cooper caught half of them. His 189 receiving yards pulled him within 15 yards of Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome’s career record at Alabama."
Our boy Amari Cooper got a helmet sticker from the guys and gals at ESPN. How could they not? He sits atop the NCAA for most receiving yards this season as well as holding the highest yards per game average. Keep doing work, Coop. And this tweet made me laugh out loud this weekend.
Soccer Cruises to a 2-0 Victory Over Jacksonville State
"The Alabama soccer team scored a goal in each half and cruised to a 2-0 victory over Jacksonville State on Sunday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The Crimson Tide dominated play from the opening whistle, outshooting the Gamecocks, 30-3, on the night, which included a 10-1 edge in shots on goal and an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks."
Men’s Golf Finishes in Fifth at Carpet Capital Collegiate
"The Alabama men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Tide closed the 54-hole event at 11-under par 853 (286-283-284) on the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club."
Those last two will get you caught up on what else is happening in the world of Alabama athletics. Have a great day and Roll Tide. Keep it right here on Bama Hammer and The Houndztooth Powered By Bama Hammer for all of your Alabama Crimson Tide news and discussions.
