Alabama Football: Could Florida Play Two Quarterbacks Against The Crimson Tide?

While there is nothing set in stone or any official word, a few articles out of the state of Florida seem to think that the Alabama football team could see two quarterbacks when they face off with Florida this Saturday.

I didn’t get to watch or review the tape of the Florida win over Kentucky from this past weekend. I started to search for local articles to see some other’s opinions on what may have happened during the game to make it so close. Was it Kentucky being an improved team? Was Florida looking ahead to Alabama? I think it was a little of both.

Sports Talk Florida had an article that described Florida’s offense and the offensive coordinator’s play calling for that game.

"New offensive coordinator Kurt Roper’s offense looked stagnant and predictable all night – but Driskel and the Gators still should have been able to muster more than three points in the first half to a middle of the road conference foe at home."

The writer of the story, Junior Skeeple, went on to describe starting quarterback Jeff Driskel’s performance as “out of rhythm, uncomfortable, and inaccurate for most of the night”. Driskel did put up impressive numbers on the night, completing 25 of 43 passes for three touchdowns and 295 yards.

While the article doesn’t come out and ask for Driskel to be replaced especially since it’s still early in the season, they want to see some packages for true freshman Treon Harris.

If Driskel struggles, Coach Muschamp could make a change to send him. He’s only attempted two passes this season but look at his stats from those two.

Those two passes (70 and 78 yards) were deep balls for touchdowns against Eastern Michigan. He definitely has a threat for those long passes so if Muschamp sees a chance to open the field in a game that he isn’t favored to win, he may take a chance.

You can see those two throws on the video below for Harris’ two touchdowns. They are about 30 seconds in. One was throw into coverage and the other was a throw to the middle of the field.

Coach Muschamp had the below quote to say in GatorCountry.com. Muschamp also told Gator Country that he notice Harris’ ability after he beat out true freshman Will Grier and Skyler Mornhinweg for the second spot behind Driskel.

"“Obviously, those were two really impressive plays. It was a good start,” UF offensive coordinator Kurt Roper said with a smirk. In previous years, the Gators may not have let their backup QB throw if they were up by more than 50 points. But Florida coach Will Muschamp wanted Harris to get experience “I told Kurt the guy needs to play,” Muschamp said. “We don’t need to sit on the ball. We need to take some shots, and we did that and he hit on it. “He needs more and more of those reps and more and more of those opportunities to go in and play the game.”"

“He’s a guy that has a knack for making plays,” Muschamp told the Orlando Sentinel. And big plays he made. Down field, too. I may be picking up the subtle signs a bit wrong but I could see it. If the Gators get behind and they need some quick score, it’s possible Roper and Muschamp could make a change. Same way if (crosses my fingers) the Gators get ahead and they bring him in late in the second half.

The coaches seem to speak too highly of him for me to not thing he will see the field this Saturday against Alababma. If he does, watch for those long balls to see if he can raise his quarterback rating to a bit higher than 1051. No typo. Regardless of what happens, it will be interesting to see if Driskel struggles , will we see Treon Harris? The Florida fans have started to jump on the bandwagon already.

We will find out Saturday just what the Gators have up their sleeves and I’m sure Saban and company will have some different schemes to show as well.
