The New Orleans Saints are in a mobile quarterback heavy division. The NFC South was already home to one mobile quarterback that we all know and love, Cam Newton. (I do not love Cam Newton, conveying sarcasm in a blog article is tough to do.) The Panthers Cam Newton had some tough times this past year, but I don’t expect Newton’s days of occasionally skipping along for a 20 yard run are truly over.
Besides Newton the NFC South will have to deal with a new mobile quarterback, Jameis Winston. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took Jameis Winston with the number one overall pick in this years NFL draft. While I still think Winston is anything but a lock to be a success in the NFL I don’t think there’s anyway you can deny his ability to make things happen with his feet. Even if Winston were to wash out of the NFL after one year he’s still going to be a new challenge this year.
What this means is that the New Orleans Saints will be playing at least 4 games a year against mobile quarterbacks. Add on to this that the Saints will be playing the Tennessee Titans and Marcus Mariota this year. Mariota was the fastest QB in the draft this year running a 4.52 40 yard dash.
So what does all this mean for Blake Sims? A good use of Sims for the Saints would be to make him either a backup or the QB of their practice squad. Sims could replicate the mobile quarterback conditions the Saints will be facing this year. This could be a huge advantage for the Saints defense going into 5 games in 2015. 5 games in the NFL can be the difference in a playoff run and a disaster of a season.
I think a practice squad position might be great for Sims as well. It would give him more time to develop and work with NFL players and coaches. A successful season on a practice squad could very well turn into a spot as a backup in 2016 for a more seasoned and experienced Blake Sims.
