5 NFL Teams That Could Use Blake Sims
5. The New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are allegedly going to have to rely on their backup quarterbacks for the first four games of the 2015 season. I say “allegedly” because I think the chances of Tom Brady’s suspension not getting shortened on appeal are about as likely as the magical land of Narnia really existing. Tom Brady’s inevitable appeal victory aside, the Pats are in a position where they have to plan for the worst.
The Patriots backup QB is Jimmy Garoppolo, who got his chance to get on the radar of big time NFL teams when he played in the Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama in 2014 after AJ McCarron decline an invitation to play in it. I’m not saying McCarron won’t have success with the Bengals… I’m just saying there might be an alternate universe where AJ is about to start 4 games for the New England Patriots.
Garoppolo is solid, but if your backup becomes your starter then you quickly have to start being concerned with your backups backup. Backing up Garoppolo is Garret Gilbert out of SMU. Gilbert is a 2014 sixth round pickup of the St. Louis Rams who the Pats signed to lead their practice squad.
I wouldn’t think the Pats have a ton of confidence in Garrett Gilbert yet, and I’m not saying the Pats should have a ton of confidence in Blake Sims. Sims would be another reliable arm to add to a shallow QB roster though.
The Pats are also one of the most dynamic teams in the NFL. The Pats have no problem bringing in guys that other teams have tossed aside and trying out new things. How quickly did Wes Welker go from the darling of New England to a guy they were perfectly fine replacing.
at QB is new for New England, but change in general around the team is not, even when it involves guys you would think are untouchable veterans. Make no mistake, Bill Belichick is out to win and you are only useful to him while he thinks you’re the best way to do that.
The Pats also do running back by committee, a committee which helped the Pats get yet another Super Bowl victory. Picking up a solid backup QB and possible RB in Blake Sims now might take the pressure of a Patriots squad that is going to be down a first round draft pick in 2016.
Will Blake Sims land at one of these NFL teams? I don’t know. I hope one of Alabama’s most selfless and inspiring quarterbacks of the last ten years finds an NFL home though. I think any NFL team would be lucky to have a guy like Blake Sims on their squad.
