Norbert Leo Butz
Norbert Leo Butz is one of only nine actors to win two Tony Awards as a lead actor. He has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama’s Professional Actor Training Program, administered with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
Leo Butz first appeared on Broadway in 1996 as the understudy for Roger Davis in Rent. He was also in the original Broadway cast of Wicked in the role of Fiyero.
Butz’s first Tony nomination came as Camille Raquin in Thou Shalt Not, a show which ran for only 85 performances in late 2001 and early 2002. He was nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
His first Tony win came in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which opened in 2004 and is based on a 1988 movie of the same name starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine. Butz starred opposite John Lithgow in the original stage production. The Broadway production received 10 Tony nominations, though Norbert Leo Butz’s win for Best Actor was the show’s only win.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels ran for over 600 performances on Broadway and has toured nationally and internationally. It opened in London’s West End in 2014 and is currently making a UK tour.
Catch Me If You Can, the musical adaptation of the 2002 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, led to Butz’s second Tony win. Butz won a Tony for Best Actor in the role of Carl Hanratty, played onscreen by Tom Hanks.
Most recently, Butz was in Netflix’s original series Bloodline with Kyle Chandler and Sissy Spacek.
