Rear Admiral Charles Richard

Rear Adm. Charles Richard graduated with honors from the University of Alabama in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He also holds masters’ degrees from Catholic University of America and the Naval War College.

A native of Decatur, AL, Richard joined the Navy as an officer in 1984, In May 2012, he was nominated to the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower Half). At the time, he was serving as the Chief of Staff for Submarine Force Atlantic. He then served as Deputy Commander for JFCC – Global Strike and as Commander for Submarine Group 10 based in Kings Bay, GA.

In March of this year he was one of 22 rear admirals (lower half) nominated for appointment to the rank of Rear Admiral (Upper Half). He now serves as the Director of Undersea War Division (N97) in Washington, D.C. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, three Defense Superior Service Medals, and four Legion of Merit awards.

Rear Admiral Richard is of course just one of many of the brave men and women who studied at the Capstone and went on to serve our country. The University of Alabama currently sponsors Army and Air Force ROTC programs. UA also offers fully accredited online courses through the Bama by Distance remote learning initiative which allow service members around the world to continue their education both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level.

Rear Admiral Richard lives in Saint Mary’s, GA with his wife and three children. Two of his three children attended UA.
