Samuel Di Piazza

Samuel Di Piazza is a native of Birmingham and a graduate of the University of Alabama. In 2014, he was elected to the board of directors of Birmingham-based insurance company ProAssurance, the most recent appointment in an illustrious business career.

Upon graduation from UA with a bachelor’s in accounting and economics, Di Piazza went to the University of Houston to earn a Master of Accountancy. He then joined Coopers & Lybrand, one of the firms that merged to form what is now PricewaterhouseCoopers.

After six years, he was named a partner at C&L. He later managed the offices in Birmingham and in Chicago. In 1992 he became managing partner of C&L’s Midwest region. In 1994 he moved to New York City to work in a similar role as well as in the role of VP of Client Services. In 2000 he was elected chairman and senior partner of the US firm. He held that role until 2002, when he became chairman and managing partner of the entire PwC operation.

Di Piazza served two terms as chairman of PwC before retiring in 2009. In 2011, he joined Citi as a Vice Chairman. In 2014 he left his position with Citi to join the board of directors of ProAssurance.

He has also served on the board of directors of DirecTV, Apollo Group, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. He has been on the board of trustees of the Mayo Clinic, served as an executive of Junior Achievement Worldwide, and been involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
