In the third year of the SEC Championship Game the venue had changed but the opponents had not. The game moved to Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, where it will be played for the 21st time this season. Alabama entered the championship game 11-0, but the 9-1-1 Florida Gators were a 7 point favorite.

The Tide was coming off of an Iron Bowl victory that was Auburn’s first loss since the 1992 season. The Gators had tied rival Florida State the previous week.

Late in the game, Alabama was down 24-23 and driving. A field goal would have won the game. Instead, quarterback Jay Barker was intercepted and the drive (along with Alabama’s hopes for a second national title in three years) was cut short.

The Tide instead advanced to the Citrus Bowl where they defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes.
