Inside Linebacker

Lee Roy Jordan

Lee Roy Jordan played fullback in high school in Excel, Alabama, but when he got to the University of Alabama he played both linebacker and center.

Jordan was the MVP of two Alabama football bowl games – the 1960 Blue Bonnet Bowl against the Texas Longhorns and the 1962 Orange Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners.

Jordan was part of the 1961 National Championship team, was an All-American, and was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

The highest praise for Jordan might come from Bear Bryant himself, though…

“He was one of the finest football players the world has ever seen. If runners stayed between the sidelines, he tackled them. He never had a bad day, he was 100 percent every day in practice and in the games.”

According to Orange Bowl records, Jordan made 31 tackles against Oklahoma in the 1963 Orange Bowl. The official Alabama Record Book does not list Jordan for the making the most tackles in a single game in Alabama football history. Tackles were not an officially recorded stat until the 1970’s.

Lee Roy Jordan went on to play in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and helped the Cowboys win Super Bowl VI while attending the Pro-Bowl 5 times.

Woodrow Lowe

Woodrow Lowe played four years for Coach Paul Bryant in the early years (1972-1975) of the wishbone era. As a sophomore in1973 Lowe set the Alabama football single-season record for tackles with 134 stops. He is 4th in the Crimson Tide Record Book with 315 tackles in his Tide career.

Lowe was a three-time All-American, in 1973, 1974, and 1975. Lowe played 11 seasons in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers. He played in 162 games for the Chargers and made 15 sacks and 21 interceptions.

Woodrow Lowe is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Woodrow’s younger brother, Eddie Lowe, also played linebacker at Alabama.

Honorable Mention

Thomas Boyd

Thomas Boyd played linebacker at Alabama from 1978 through 1981. He was an All-American in 1980 and 1981. He is No. 2 on the career tackle list for Alabama football with 324 tackles. He is No. 4 in the single season Record Book for tackles with 120 stops in 1980.

Boyd was a Crimson Tide starter for three seasons.

After college Boyd was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. He played in the Canadian Football League, the World Football League and for one season he played for the Detroit Lions.

Boyd was a gifted athlete but he was not big enough to be an NFL linebacker. That lack of size did not stop him from being one of Alabama’s best linebackers ever.

Wayne Davis

Wayne Davis played for Coach Ray Perkins from 1983-1986. Davis was the three-year starter for Alabama football. Davis is the All-Time Leader at Alabama for tackles in a career. He recorded 327 tackles at Alabama.

Wayne played two seasons in the NFL for the St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals.

Wayne’s son, Ben Davis was a highly pursued 5-Star recruit. Ben will be a redshirt freshman on the 2017 Alabama football team.
