16. Tailgate On the Quad

We generally think of tailgating as exactly that – setting up a food spread and hanging out on the tailgate of your truck. At Alabama, “Tailgating” takes on a whole new meaning.

Several days before every home game, the beautifully landscaped area in the center of campus in between Gorgas Library and Denny Chimes known as The Quad becomes abuzz with people setting up huge crimson and white tents, white plastic chairs, and – you guessed it – a lovely set of porta-potties.

Companies and groups of people with more money than I’ll ever have pay to rent a space on the Quad for game day. They bring in catered food from all over, music, games, and enough sweet tea to quench your thirst for a lifetime. Most set-ups include TVs powered by generators so tailgaters can watch other games around the country while enjoying their lunch and gearing up for the Tide’s own match.

Even if you can’t afford your own tailgate spot on the Quad, make friends with someone who can so that you too can experience the sights and sounds of the “pre-parties” before an Alabama home game.
