Vanderbilt: The Oldest Child

Chances are, the majority of the student body at Vanderbilt University in Nashville is comprised of first-borns with Type-A personalities. Known for its difficult admission standards and strong academics, Vandy is often said to be “The Ivy League of the South”.

In the SEC Family, Vanderbilt is most definitely the Oldest Child – the over-achieving big brother who always puts too much pressure on himself to make A’s in every AP class available. The Oldest Child works hard to get good grades and have a full list of impressive extra-curricular activities. The problem is that this over-scheduled child often has no interest or time in developing any sports-related abilities. In fact, Vanderbilt football has an all-time losing record at 589-599-50 since the program’s inaugural season in 1890.

Probably picked last in a neighborhood game of touch-football, oldest child Vandy is more likely to be a part of the Mathletes than any actual athletic team. It may say “Limitless” on the walls of the tunnel of Vanderbilt Stadium, but let’s face it: we all know they’re probably talking about a calculus function.
