Willie Mays

Alabama’s Sports Mount Rushmore absolutely MUST include the pride of Westfield, Alabama.

Willie Mays was born in 1931 and began his sports career at Fairfield Industrial High School where he played baseball, basketball, and football.

Mays was a little different than the others on this list so far, because he began his professional career playing for the Negro League while still in high school.  The “Say Hey Kid” was signed to a minor league deal by the New York Giants in 1951 and quickly climbed up the ranks.

He actually played in the majors that same year, taking home Rookie of the Year honors and even playing in the World Series.  Willie would lead the Giants back to the World Series in 1954, where he made his famous over-the-head catch, that is still known as one of the greatest baseball plays of all time.

Willie entered the Hall of Fame in 1979 as a unanimous selection, with a career Batting Average of .302, he amassed 3,283 hits and hit 660 home runs and played in 24 All-Star Games.
