Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin talks with QB Jalen Hurts (2) and WR Calvin Ridley (3).

The battle for the starting quarterback position was far from over when the Tide took over on offense. True freshman Jalen Hurts took the snaps to start the game and went 9 for 11 in the first quarter. Hurts looked for receivers Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart, and tight end OJ Howard in the passing game. Damien Harris started as Bama’s top running back, and was backed up by Bo Scarborough.

In the second quarter, freshman Blake Barnett came in under center while Hurts rested on the sidelines. It seemed as though Saban might be going with a two quarterback system for a minute, but a mediocre showing from Barnett changed everyone’s minds. Hurts re-entered the game after halftime and played the majority of the second half.

It’s looking more and more like Jalen Hurts will win out, and will indeed be the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide this season.
