Alabama Football: Way Back Wednesday – The Last Time UT Beat Bama

The Alabama football team hasn’t lost to the Tennessee Vols in quite a while. Just how have things changed in that time? You may not believe it.

It’s the most wonderful time of year. The leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler, and Alabama football is about to kick the you-know-what out of Tennessee.

For the first time in a while, the game will actually be played on the Third Saturday In October, a nickname affectionately given to the rivalry. The series began in 1901, and that matchup was played in Birmingham, Alabama. The Alabama football team won that first game, and since then, the Tide leads the series 52–38–7.

The last time the Vols beat Bama was October 21, 2006. That’s TEN years ago, people. Since that fateful day, UT has been unable to eek out a win against the Tide in the nine games that have been played. In fact, a Twitter page exists only as a countdown – “Days Since UT Beat Bama”.  To date, it’s exactly 3,644 days.

A lot of things have happened in that timespan.

For example, Alabama football quarterback Jalen Hurts graduated elementary school. It’s true – the last time Tennessee beat Bama, Hurts was just nine years old.

Speaking of children, in 2006, former child star and current controversial pop icon Miley Cyrus was still Hannah Montana. And she looked like this.

George W. Bush was in the White House, and no one was talking about Hillary Clinton OR Donald Trump much. Ahhhh, those were the days.

Ten years ago was Mike Shula’s last year at the helm of the Alabama football team (Praise da Lort!). Current head coach Nick Saban entered his second season with the Miami Dolphins. He wore orange and aqua green – but still ate oatmeal cream pies for breakfast. Some things never change.

Everyone made poor musical choices got sick of the song “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter, and pop music reigned supreme on the Billboard Top 100. People mostly liked Kanye West, and we all sang along to “Golddigger”, whether we admit it or not.

To make up for so-so music, the year gave us some smashing dramas and action movies like The Departed, The Prestige, and The Da Vinci Code. Plus, we got some guilty pleasure films in The Devil Wears Prada, The Holiday, and John Tucker Must Die. (Hey, they’re funny. Don’t judge).

Gas cost an average of $2.58 per gallon, and minimum wage was a whopping $5.15 an hour. Apparently there are reasons other than football to be glad it’s not 2006 anymore.
