A bye-week comes for the Alabama football team once a season. How did Crimson Tide fans spend their weekend off?
Once each season, the Alabama football team has an “off” weekend without a game to play. The team still practices, but they rest and prepare for the remaining schedule. In 2016’s case, Bama has LSU, Miss State, UT Chattanooga, and Auburn to contend with over the next four weeks.
But what did Bama fans do when their beloved Crimson Tide was off? I asked around, and came up with a short but very true list.
Literally Everything On The Honey-Do List
Shrubs need trimming? Did it on the bye week. Car needs detailing? Waited til the bye-week. Alabama football fans cram as much as possible into this one weekend – and specifically, Saturday – each season as possible. None of the stuff on the Honey-Do list can be completed on a game day, because let’s face it – our Tide needs us. Hopefully, you got four months worth of work done over the last 48 hours. If Bama stays, at minimum, number one in the SEC West, there won’t be an another opportunity for house-work, car maintenance or cleaning until December 10th. (We know you’re disappointed, right?)

All Major Life Events
Good Alabama football fans know better than to get married or throw a party on most Saturdays in the fall. The one notable exception is, of course, the bye-week. Every major wedding venue in the Yellowhammer State held some sort of ceremony or reception last weekend. It’s the one time Bama fans can gather together on an October Saturday to celebrate the love of anything other than Alabama football. I’d like to personally thank the University of Alabama for planning their off-week around the same time as my youngest child’s birthday. It makes party planning SO much easier.

Cheered For Earthquakes
No, no one ever really hopes for an earthquake or other natural disaster. However, bye-weeks bring out the Gump in everyone while we watch other teams battle it out. Anyone else watch Auburn at Ole Miss and wish a sinkhole would appear and suck in both teams? The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (Florida vs Georgia) saw many Bama fans rooting for a loss for both teams. We knew those things wouldn’t happen, but that didn’t stop us from hoping.
Vacations
Many Alabama football fans opted to use the bye-week as a last opportunity for vacation before winter sets in. Apparently Disney World is a favorite of the Tide faithful, as is any beach within a 500 mile radius of Tuscaloosa. Though the rest of the country is happily enjoying fall weather, the people of Alabama are still stuck with high temperatures in the 80s. Might as well get as much use out of our flip-flops as possible before the cold sets in, right?

Sat Around Bored and Confused
Waking up on a bye-week is confusing, y’all. We all started to reach for the remote to flip on GameDay, or got out the Crock Pot to cook the RoTel, then realized….Alabama wasn’t playing. It’s a strange feeling to have an entire Saturday in the fall without Alabama football. Some of us just didn’t know what to do. Others romanced their Netflix que (Yes baby, I’m still here), and still others idly channel surfed looking for a reason to cheer for another team. Nothing is ever the same as when we pull for our Tide, but we had to do something to fill the void.

Mentally Prepared For LSU
Even the most confident Alabama football fan gets nervous going into the LSU game. Something about going into Tiger Stadium at night is always unsettling. Alabama opened as a seven-point favorite against the Bayou Bengal Tigers. This line is nerve-wracking to many who believe a three or give point spread makes more sense. The Crimson Tide is still ranked No. 1, but LSU jumped to No.14. Regardless of betting odds or what the experts think, true Bammers know better than to overlook even the worst of LSU teams. The matchup is sure to be exciting (and likely nausea-inducing). However, LSU’s Leonard Fournette promised a beatdown of the Tide last week. We all know what happens when another team gives Alabama football bulletin board material…
