Yelling At Refs Against Arkansas

We could make an entire slide show of Nick Saban yelling at officials. It happens. It’s not particularly exciting. But watching Coach run out practically to the middle of the field in this clip really sets it apart.

It was early in the third quarter, and LB Rashaan Evans had just been flagged for roughing the passer. Arkansas had just converted on 3rd and 4 after a pass interference call on Marlon Humphrey, but otherwise hadn’t had much success moving the ball.

On 2nd and 10, the pocket collapsed around Arkansas QB Austin Allen. Rashaan Evans was engaged with OL Dan Skipper. As Evans broke through the block, it looked like Skipper pulled on his jersey and sort of tossed him out of the way. Evans got tripped up and ended up hitting Allen low.

Quarterbacks are defenseless and hitting them low is a no, but Saban seems to be making the case that since Evans was thrown and wasn’t really in control he didn’t intend to go low.

The drive would end with an interception by Minkah Fitzpatrick, his second of the day. The only two first downs Arkansas got on the possession came via penalties, so you can see how he might have gotten annoyed on the second one.
