Three Coaches with Three Losses to Alabama Who Could Add More Quickly

Gus Malzahn – Auburn (2013-2016)

Hugh Freeze – Ole Miss (2012-2016)

Jim McElwain – Colorado State and Florida (2012-2016)

For two of the coaches in this group, the big question is how many more games will they coach against Alabama Football. Gus is trending down rapidly in Auburn and the Tigers can be an impatient bunch. Freeze may not make it to the 2017 season kickoff, due to the doom of impending NCAA penalties.

Auburn has an uncanny habit of divining a magic season at least once every several years. Perhaps Gus can regain his reputation as an Offensive Genius. Improbable results happen from time to time in the Iron Bowl and each win against Alabama probably allows Gus to lose to the Tide two more times.

Ole Miss may make Hugh the human sacrifice in an effort to diminish probation penalties. Or they may hunker down and go all-in with the Preacher and give him time to reload a depleted roster. An Ole Miss coach can survive losing to Alabama as long as he consistently beats State and tops LSU and Arkansas often.

McElwain is not likely to ever reach seven losses against the Tide. He will remain short of the WOAT Top Ten, if for no other reason because Florida is in the East Division of the SEC.

A little house-cleaning before we wrap up this fun exercise. Between seven losses and four losses, there are other WOATS. We chose to not list them all. Five of them might be of interest to Alabama Football fans.

Pat Dye lost six games to Alabama in his Auburn career. Two Alabama guys also lost six times to Alabama as opposing coaches: Bill Battle and Steve Sloan.

Some true followers of college football history will find it interesting that Johnny Vaught of Ole Miss and Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech lost to Alabama six times. Both of those coaches are still considered as the GOAT at those schools.

Funny isn’t it. One fan group’s GOAT, another fan group’s  WOAT. No wonder we love college football so.
