WOAT No. 3 – Jeff Bower – Southern Mississippi (1990-2007)

Record Against Alabama Football: 1 Win – 13 Losses

Jeff Bower played quarterback at Southern Mississippi from 1972-1975. Bower’s three season Golden Eagle career led to him being fifth all-time in USM career touchdown passes and sixth in career total offensive yardage.

He was a Golden Eagle graduate assistant from 1975-1977. His assistant coach career began at Southern Miss in 1977. He was also an assistant at SMU, Wake Forest, and Oklahoma State.

During his eighteen seasons as Head Coach at USM, Bower’s teams were 119-83-1. The Golden Eagles had a winning record in each of Bower’s last 14 seasons as Head Coach.

Following a 7-6 record in 2007, Bower was dismissed by Southern Miss. Bower’s teams were 1-13 against Alabama Football.

Even though Bower was only 54 years old when he was released by USM, he never coached again. Last month he was named as a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee.

WOAT No. 4 – Johnny Majors – University of Tennessee (1977-1992)

Record Against Alabama Football: 4 Wins – 12 Losses

Shirley Majors coached football for almost three decades at Huntland High School and the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Four of his sons played or coached at the University of Tennessee, two of whom were All-American players. The Majors family is revered and often described as the Royal Family of Tennessee football.

The older of the two All-Americans, Johnny Majors was a head coach from 1968-1996 including 16 seasons as Head Coach for the Tennessee Volunteers. Prior to returning to his alma mater in 1977, Majors coached Pittsburgh to the 1976 National Championship.

Johnny Majors’ record as Head Vol was 116-62-8. Majors was SEC Coach of the Year in 1985. His Volunteer teams won SEC Championships in 1985, 1989, and 1990.

Given his pedigree in Tennessee football, it was reasonable to expect Majors would coach the Vols until retirement. It did not work out that way. Majors was fired after coaching only eight games in the 1992 season.

Many believe Majors was pushed out at Tennessee due to the lobbying of his then assistant coach, Phillip Fulmer. After Majors was fired, Fulmer was named Head Coach for the Vols.

Why was a Tennessee Volunteer hero thrown to the wayside by the Vols? Majors’ record against Alabama was 4-12. In his last Tennessee season in 1992, Majors lost his seventh consecutive game to Alabama.

Majors returned to Pitt as head coach for four seasons after his Tennessee exit. His record in the Pitt return was 12-32. Majors was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
