WOAT No. 5 – Jackie Sherrill – Texas A&M (1982-1988); Mississippi State (1991-2003)

Record Against Alabama Football: 4 Wins – 11 Losses

Jackie Sherrill was an Alabama Football starter on two Tide National Championship teams (1964 and 1965).

Sherrill was an assistant to Johnny Majors at Pitt. After one season as Head Coach at Washington State, Sherrill returned to Pitt as Head Coach in 1977 after Majors left for Tennessee. In 1982 Sherrill went from Pitt to Texas A&M.

Sherrill’s Aggie teams went 52-28-1, winning the Southwest Conference Championship (SWC) in 1985, 1986, and 1987. Sherrill was SWC Coach of the Year in 1985, 1986, and 1987. He is also credited with starting the 12th Man Kickoff team, made up of walk-on players.

In 1988 TAMU was placed on probation. Sherrill was not found to be guilty of the serious recruiting violations but he resigned after the 1988 season.

After not coaching in 1989 and 1990, Sherrill became the Mississippi State Bulldog Head Coach in 1991. Sherrill’s record at Mississippi was 75-75-2. His 75 wins make him the winningest coach in Mississippi State football history. Sherrill’s teams had a record of 4-11 against Alabama.

Sherril left Mississippi State in 2003, under the cloud of a probation investigation. He never coached again.
