WOAT No. 8 Dan Mullen – Mississippi State (2009-2016)

Record Against Alabama Football: 0 Wins – 8 Losses

Dan Mullen exploded on the college coaching, national radar during his stint as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach for Utah and the Florida Gators. At Utah and Florida under Urban Meyer, Mullen tutored star college quarterbacks Alex Smith, Chris Leak, and Tim Tebow.

Dan Mullen recently signed a four -year contract extension with Mississippi State through the 2020 season. Mullen is in, or near the Top Ten highest paid coaches in the nation at a reported $4.5 million for 2017.

Mullen’s record as a Head Coach is 61-42, including last season’s 6-7 finish as the Bulldogs rebuilt from the loss of Dak Prescott. Mullen’s 61 wins leaves him 14 wins short of Jackie Sherrill’s 75 wins as the Bulldogs winningest coach. His five bowl wins already places Mullen at the top of that Bulldog coach achievement category.

A new contract, a promising young quarterback looking to escape Dak Prescott’s shadow, another Egg Bowl win in 2016 and fertile recruiting terrain amid Ole Miss misfortunes. Optimism for the fortunes of Dan Mullen and the future of Mississippi State football may be at an apex.

What Dan Mullen may be missing amid the giddiness is history. Among the eight WOAT coaches we have already reviewed, only one, Joe Paterno had a fan-base that would accept losing to Alabama. Penn State fans wanted to better the Tide in every contest, but Nittany Lion reputation was rarely threatened by sporadic losses to a top team.

At Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas; even Ole Miss and Mississippi State, losses to Alabama are an every season challenge. In our historical review of the WOATS, only Paterno survived the peril of too many losses to the Tide.

At $4.5 million per season, Mullen’s 0-8 record against the Tide can maybe stretch to 0-9 before the moving vans are summoned. But at 0-10, or 1-11, certainly at 1-12, there will be no more contract extensions coming out of Starkville.
