Alabama Sports: Let’s Check Out Current Team Rankings

Alabama sports has a history of National and SEC Championships. The Alabama football championships are well known but Men’s and Women’s Golf, Gymnastics and Softball have earned National and SEC Championships. Let’s check on the current national rankings for each one.

The 21st century has been kind to Alabama sports, with Football, Gymnastics, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf and Softball winning a combined 11 National Championships.

  • Football: 2009: 2011; 2012; 2015
  • Gymnastics: 2002; 2011; 2012
  • Men’s Golf: 2013; 2014
  • Women’s Golf: 2012
  • Softball: 2012

Let’s take a look at the current status of Gymnastics, Softball and the Golf teams. We’ll update the current national ranking for each and preview this season’s championship opportunities.

Alabama Gymnastics

The Alabama Gymnastics team is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Crimson Tide follows Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, Florida, Utah in the national rankings. Other ranked SEC teams are Georgia at No.8; Kentucky at No.12; Missouri at No.14; and Auburn at No.21.

The SEC Gymnastics Tournament is this Saturday in Jacksonville, FL. Alabama is seeded No.3 in the event and will compete in the evening session with Georgia, Florida and LSU. The meet can be seen live on the SEC Network.

Alabama Women’s Golf

The Alabama Women’s Golf team is currently ranked No.3 in the nation, behind Stanford and USC. Other ranked SEC teams are: Florida, No.6; Georgia, No.8; South Carolina, No.10; Arkansas, No.16; Texas A&M, No.19.

The Tide women have won tournaments this season. Their next tournament is the Bryan national Collegiate, hosted by Wake Forest. The three tournament rounds are Mar. 31 thru April 2.

Alabama Women’s Golf sophomores Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson lead the Tide team. Knight is ranked No. 2 in the nation with a scoring average of 69.83. Stephenson is ranked No. 7 with a scoring average of 70.61.

Alabama Softball

Alabama Softball is currently ranked No.8 in the nation by USA Softball and ESPN. SEC foes ranked above Alabama are Florida, No.1; Auburn, No.5; and Texas A&M, No.7. Other ranked SEC teams: LSU, No.12; Tennessee, No.14; Georgia, No.16; Kentucky, No.18; Ole Miss, No.24; and Arkansas, No.25.

Alabama softball pitcher, Alexis Osorio is ranked as the National Player of the Week. Osorio is 13-1, plus 2 saves in her 16 appearances for the season. She has an ERA of 0.72 and 161 Strikeouts.

Alabama softball has two games Wednesday against Georgia Southern and Winthrop and travels to Starkville this weekend for a three-game series against Mississippi State.

Alabama Men’s Golf

Alabama Men’s Golf is currently unranked. Crimson Tide golfer Lee Hodges is the SEC Player of the Week after winning medalist honors at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate Tournament. Hodges finished the 54 hole event at 10 under par.

Next up for Alabama Men’s Golf is the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, GA. The tournament begins on Sunday, Mar. 19.

Alabama Indoor Track and Field

The Alabama Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field teams competed last week in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Nineteen Crimson Tiders earned All-American honors.

The Tide Women’s team finished third in the national championship, behind Oregon and Georgia. The Tide Men’s team finished eighth in the event.

The young lady in the photo above was the Alabama star of the NCAA National Championship. Lakan Taylor earned an Individual National Champion honor, winning the pole vault with a jump of 14-feet, seven inches.

Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball

Alabama won another National Championship last week. The Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team earned its fifth national championship.

Alabama sports enjoy so much hard-earned success. Champions and non-champions alike, all these athletes continue the tradition of Crimson Tide competitive excellence.
