Wide Receivers

Prior to the A-day game, we described the 2017 Alabama football receiving corps as Calvin Ridley and five more wides. Robert Foster was the next wideout to be possibly considered as a starter lock. Foster’s performance in A-Day, particularly his 65-yard catch-and-streak TD, elevated him to starter status.

Wideout No. 3 is either T.J. Simmons or Jerry Jeudy. Simmons had a good A-Day, with six catches, including a touchdown. Simmons also dropped two passes.

True freshman Jerry Jeudy was sensational in A-Day. He caught five passes, good for 134 yards. Two of those catches were for touchdowns, one a deflected gift, the other leaping over the top of a defensive back. The media gave Jeudy game MVP Dixie Howell Award honors.

It was only one spring game but Jeudy appears to have potential not dissimilar to Ridley, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones.  For the time being, we’ll designate Simmons and Jeudy as wideouts 3A and 3B.

In a six-player rotation, two more regular spots will be won during fall camp. Cam Sims probably leads currently based upon his experience. Xavian Marks along with true freshman Tyrell Shavers and Chadarius Townsend have a chance to be in the mix.

Derek Kief was not much of a factor during A-Day, but the redshirt junior has experience and is respected for his blocking ability. Little known senior Donnie Lee might earn some playing time.

Henry Ruggs will be a factor after his summer arrival. Don’t be surprised if Ruggs leaps forward to the six-man rotation before October. On a team blessed with extraordinary athletes, Ruggs’ athletic ability is exceptional.
