Alabama Softball is the No. 16 seed in the NCAA field of 64. The Crimson Tide will host a regional at Rhodes Stadium with Minnesota, Louisiana Tech and Albany.

After a brilliant start that was followed by a rough conference record, Alabama softball got word of its fate Sunday. The Tide got the 16 seed and just qualifies enough to host a regional at their home field, Rhodes Stadium. The Crimson Tide will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers (54-3), the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (37-22) and the Albany Great Danes (27-16).

The Road to the Women’s College World Series

In case you don’t know the format of the NCAA Tournament, let’s break down the exact path for a team to make it to the WCWS:

  • The first round is the Regional. These are hosted by the Top 16 seeds as determined by the NCAA. The format is a double-elimination tournament at each site. The winner of the Regional advances the Super Regionals.
  • The Super Regionals are held at eight different sites, determined by the highest seeds still in play or by the NCAA. The format here is a best-of-three series. Winner at each site moves on to the WCWS.
  • The WCWS starts out as two separate, double-elimination style tournaments similar to the Regional round. This is held at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK. The winner of each of these brackets plays a best-of-three series for the National Championship.

Alabama’s path to the WCWS is arguably the hardest of all the seeded teams. The Tuscaloosa regional is in the bracket as the Gainsville Regional, where 1-seed Florida hosts Florida A&M, FIU and Oklahoma State.

If Alabama wins the Tuscaloosa Regional, they would travel to Gainsville for the Super Regional to take on the top-seeded Gators. That is unless Florida were to lose their Regional, in which case Alabama would take on the winner of the Gainsville Regional at Rhodes Stadium. The silver lining? Last year, 16-seed Georgia knocked out Florida 2-0 in the Super Regional Series in Gainsville.
