Pat Dye has gone too far and it is clear Auburn is afraid of Alabama football. Dye says that the Iron Bowl does not have to be played every season.

Last week we discussed that Pat Dye had publicly agreed with Nick Saban. Some Alabama fans warned us Dye likely had a nefarious motive.

Dye said two things of note last week. First, he endorsed Nick Saban’s argument that all SEC teams should play a 9-game conference season. Saban has lobbied for the extra conference game for awhile but most schools have been opposed.

Dye’s other epistle was that Auburn should be moved to the SEC East division and Missouri moved to the SEC West. Dye lamented the unfair travel burden on Missouri fans and player families. Based on geography, Dye was correct. It is illogical for Missouri to travel to Gainesville and Columbia, S.C. and not travel to Fayetteville and Oxford every other season.

Knowing Dye is a sly old fox, with no track record of compassion for other fanbases, we should have immediately expected treachery and deceit. Dye and Auburn are not the least bit concerned about Missouri and its fans.

Pat Dye and Auburn are afraid of Alabama football. Here is what Dye said on his weekly radio show reported by Gridiron Now.

"“I’d rather see Auburn in the East than us to play Alabama every year,” Dye said he’d rather Auburn move to the East, even if the Tigers couldn’t play the Tide annually. “We don’t need to let Alabama dictate what we do at Auburn, we can play them on a rotation, just like everybody else.”"

Dye has added a new angle in his Auburn to the SEC East campaign.

"Dye said he thinks the move would benefit students. “We get a ton of students from Tennessee and Georgia and Florida. A lot of out-of-state students come from those three states to Auburn. I don’t think anyone has ever considered the students and the student body, and it’s their football team.”"

Our guess is that Pat Dye cares as much about Auburn students as he does Missouri students – as in, not one bit. What Pat Dye wants is not losing to Alabama football on an average of seven out of every ten Novembers.

Losing to Alabama football five out of the last six seasons makes Dye and most Auburn fans crazy. Crazy enough to believe the Tigers will not lose credibility by running away from playing an Iron Bowl every season.
